Rehabilitation physicians within Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Associates are board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation.
Rehabilitation physicians are technically known as physiatrists. Physiatrists are trained to:
- diagnose the extent of an injury through a physical exam, electromyography and/or nerve conduction studies
- prescribe medicines and assistive devices such as braces and artificial limbs.
- employ a variety of healing therapies, from traction to electrotherapy and massage
- tailor a course of therapeutic exercise to help restore function, and avoid future injury
- coordinate a team of rehabilitation professionals if extensive rehabilitation is indicated. This can be done either as an inpatient either at the Sister
Kenny Rehabilitation Institute at United Hospital or Abbott Northwestern Hospital, or as an outpatient.
The physicians have two clinic locations — at Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute on Abbott Northwestern Hospital’s campus, and across from United Hospital in St. Paul. Physician services are also offered in several other Twin Cities communities.
